TIHC Sessions is the third research programme of The Institute for Hybrid Cultures, focused on collective gathering, third spaces, and contemporary social infrastructure.

The programme explores how people gather outside traditional environments of home and work, building on ideas associated with Ray Oldenburg's third space theory. Rather than treating the third space as a fixed location, Sessions approaches it as a living cultural structure shaped by participation, environment, ritual, and social behaviour.

Each Session, or "Chapter," is built around a single shared activity experienced collectively. Listening sessions, reading groups, communal meals, conversations, movement, study, and other formats become tools for research into presence, participation, trust, and community formation.

Every Chapter functions simultaneously as a curatorial format, research method, and temporary social infrastructure. Over time, the programme builds a living archive of how people interact, what conditions encourage meaningful exchange, and how new forms of cultural gathering can be developed today.

Participation is intentionally limited to maintain focused and engaged group dynamics. Each gathering is curated around the specific format, allowing Sessions to operate as both a public research programme and an evolving framework for cultural experimentation, community building, and third space development.

Collective reading

Participants arrived with their own texts. For sixty minutes the room read in collective silence — no facilitation, no agenda. A voluntary exchange followed. People brought novels, papers, poems, documents long postponed. The silence was not empty.

"For sixty minutes we read together. In the exchange that followed, three people read aloud — one sentence each. One person said: 'I forgot this was possible.'"TIHC Sessions / Chapter 01 Archive Note

A recurring programme of structured collective Chapters by The Institute for Hybrid Cultures. Each Chapter is one format — one activity, done together. Over time the Chapters build a living record of how people gather, and what that gathering makes possible. It is a research methodology and a cultural practice at the same time.

Applications open publicly when a new Chapter is announced. Capacity is limited by design. Selected participants are contacted in advance with the exact location.

Third spaces are the social environments that are neither home nor work. The concept has a theoretical lineage in urban sociology — but the condition it describes is ancient. As commercial infrastructure occupies more of these environments, the definition becomes an open question. Sessions is the experiment. You are invited into it.

Chapter 01 — Reading — took place on 9 April 2026 in Basel. Participants gathered and read in collective silence for sixty minutes, then had the option to exchange. It was the first public activation of the programme.

The TIHC Registry

Chapter announcements reach the registry first. Capacity is limited — being on the list means you hear before the public call opens.
